Grzegorz Braun charged in Poland for denying Auschwitz gas chambers
Grzegorz Braun, a far-right leader and Member of the European Parliament, has been formally charged by Polish prosecutors for denying Nazi crimes. The charges, brought by the Kraków branch of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), stem from statements Braun made in July 2025 in which he claimed the gas chambers at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp were ‘fake’ and described accounts of their use as a ‘propaganda narrative’.
Braun has pleaded not guilty to the charges, though he did not deny making the statements. Under Polish law, the public denial of Nazi genocide is a criminal offense that can result in a fine or up to three years in prison. The legal proceedings were made possible after the European Parliament approved a request to strip Braun of his parliamentary immunity in March.
Following his meeting with prosecutors, Braun reiterated his skepticism, describing the gas chambers as ‘mythical’ and claiming that states are being ‘blackmailed’ by these widely accepted historical facts. Prosecutors have launched an additional investigation into these subsequent remarks.
