Gáspár Orbán allegedly directed Hungary Helps mission to Chad

Newly released government documents suggest that Gáspár Orbán, son of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, played a significantly more central role in the Hungary Helps mission to Chad than previously disclosed. According to documents obtained by 444.hu, Gáspár Orbán did not merely participate in the project but acted as a key figure directing its operations.

The mission, which originally targeted Niger before shifting to Chad due to political changes, encompassed humanitarian, economic, and educational objectives alongside military components. The documents indicate that Gáspár Orbán directed the Coordination Office and was responsible for leading the entire medical mission. Furthermore, the reports suggest that no significant progress could be made on the project without his approval.

These findings contradict previous statements from Chief of Staff Gábor Böröndi, who described claims of Gáspár Orbán’s leadership as an “extreme exaggeration,” asserting that a planning group led by Lieutenant General Ferenc Kajári was responsible. The revelations raise questions regarding the extent of the Prime Minister’s son’s influence over Hungary’s African strategy and the decision-making processes within state organizations like the Hungary Helps Agency.
