Gáspár Orbán involvement in Hungary Helps Chad mission

Newly released government documents suggest that Gáspár Orbán, son of the Hungarian Prime Minister, exercised significant control over the ‘Hungary Helps’ mission in Chad. While the mission was originally intended for Niger, it shifted to Chad following political changes and included humanitarian, economic, military, and educational objectives.

Initial reports indicate that Gáspár Orbán directed the Coordination Office and led the medical mission, with documents suggesting that no significant progress could be made on the project without his approval. These findings contradict previous assertions from Chief of Staff Gábor Böröndi, who had described claims of Gáspár Orbán’s leadership as an “extreme exaggeration.”

Further details reveal his involvement in specific agricultural initiatives, such as a camel farm project managed by the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE). Despite holding the rank of captain in the Hungarian Defense Forces, Orbán reportedly acted as the ‘Project Leader’ for the camel farm, where he personally approved procurement and modifications. His guidance led to changes in the project’s scope, including the decision to split the project into two phases and the requirement for Chadian specialists to travel to Hungary.
