GTEC directs Ghana public universities to reopen by October 16
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a directive for all public universities to reopen for the 2026/2027 academic year by October 16, 2026. The order mandates that lectures must begin no later than Monday, October 19, 2026, overriding any previous institutional decisions to postpone reopening.
This directive comes in response to an ongoing industrial dispute involving the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG). GTEC noted that while administrative challenges exist due to the strike, the suspension of academic activities threatens student progression and international partnerships.
In response to the mandate, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has revised its schedule. Freshmen are expected to report on October 15, while continuing students will return on October 17. KNUST has scheduled the start of lectures for October 19, aligning with the GTEC timeline.
