Ghana public university industrial disputes
Overview
An industrial dispute involving various administrative and teaching unions has disrupted the academic calendar in Ghana’s public and technical universities.
In mid-October, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) issued a directive for all public universities to reopen by October 16, 2026, mandating that lectures commence no later than October 19. This order was intended to mitigate the impact of strikes by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) on student progression.
By late October, the Technical Universities Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) had also engaged in industrial action, which began on October 1, halting teaching and learning at technical universities. In response, the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) called for a suspension of the strike to protect student welfare. GTEC scheduled a meeting for October 28, 2026, involving university management and union leadership to address the grievances, while TUTAG planned an Extraordinary Congress to deliberate on potential strike suspensions.
