GTEC orders university managers to end strike participation
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a directive ordering senior management officials at public universities to immediately resume work amid ongoing industrial action by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG).
GTEC stated that because these officials hold executive, managerial, and policy-making roles, their participation in the strike may violate the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651). The Commission noted that their involvement could create conflicts of interest, especially as they are responsible for representing their institutions in union engagements and ensuring the continuity of essential services.
Vice-Chancellors have been instructed to submit a register of all senior officials who fail to comply with the order within 48 hours. Additionally, GTEC warned universities to ensure that the strike does not disrupt critical operations, including examinations, student services, healthcare, and finance.
