Guaíba River levels remain high in Porto Alegre

The Guaíba River in Porto Alegre remains at high levels due to heavy rainfall in other regions of Rio Grande do Sul since late September. As of Saturday evening, October 10, the water level at the Cais do Centro Histórico was recorded at 2.18 meters, showing a slow downward trend.

Throughout the month, levels have consistently stayed above 2 meters. On October 2, the river approached the 2.5-meter alert threshold due to high discharge from the Caí, Jacuí, and Taquari rivers. While the level briefly dropped below 2 meters on Thursday, October 8, it has since risen again. The overflow threshold is set at 3 meters.

Meteorological specialist Luiz Fernando Nachtigall noted that the sustained high levels are primarily driven by the Jacuí River, the Guaíba’s main contributor. Because of the Jacuí’s large scale, the significant discharge from late September continues to reach Porto Alegre and Eldorado do Sul. Forecasts suggest the Guaíba will remain high in the coming days, particularly with more rain expected in the northern part of the state.
