Guadalajara authorities investigate mass poisoning of cats in Parque Alcalde
Authorities in Guadalajara, Jalisco, are investigating the suspected mass poisoning of at least 16 cats in Parque Alcalde. Members of the Comité de Cuidado Animal Parque Alcalde reported finding numerous deceased felines within the park and in nearby streets of the Alcalde Barranquitas neighborhood.
Investigators recovered food packets near the carcasses that are suspected of containing toxic substances. These items have been submitted to the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office as evidence. The park's feline community, which was cared for by volunteers through feeding, veterinary care, and sterilization programs, consisted of approximately 40 cats.
Animal Protection officials have taken custody of some remains for forensic veterinary examinations to confirm the cause of death. In response to the incident, local residents and activists have filed a formal complaint and are demanding increased surveillance, the installation of security cameras, and clearer signage regarding penalties for animal abandonment.
