Animal poisoning incidents in Mexican parks

Overview

Authorities in Mexico are investigating separate incidents of suspected animal poisoning in public parks.

In Guadalajara, Jalisco, officials are looking into the mass poisoning of at least 16 cats in Parque Alcalde and the surrounding Alcalde Barranquitas neighborhood. Investigators recovered food packets suspected of containing toxic substances, which have been submitted to the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office. Local activists are demanding increased surveillance and security cameras following the deaths of animals previously cared for by volunteers.

In Mexico City, the Prosecutor's Office has opened an animal cruelty case following reports of dogs ingesting toxins in Parque España, located in the Condesa neighborhood. Security forces and the Animal Surveillance Brigade discovered suspicious baits, such as meat scraps and sausage containing a blue pill. While official reports confirm at least two deaths, local accounts suggest more animals may have been affected.
