Guadalajara residents protest severe water contamination

Approximately one thousand people gathered in Guadalajara for the ‘Agua KK Fest’ to demand a sanitary alert following reports of severe water contamination. Citizen organizations claim that water supplied to at least 100 neighborhoods contains fecal matter and heavy metals, including lead, mercury, and aluminum.

Protesters reported that the water often arrives discolored—ranging from black to brown—and emits foul odors of rot or rust. An exhibition of water samples from roughly 90 neighborhoods was used to demonstrate the varying levels of turbidity and contamination.

The Jalisco Health Secretariat acknowledged contamination levels in July, advising residents not to ingest the water or use it for cooking and dental hygiene. Academic Arturo Gleason from the University of Guadalajara noted that analyses of 200 samples by scientific and state bodies detected bacteria and fecal matter, highlighting the risks of heavy metal exposure. In response to the crisis, the state government has implemented an emergency plan to distribute water jugs and filters to affected citizens.
