Overview

By early September 2026, the infrastructure and water management crisis in Mexico intensified as severe storms caused widespread flooding and structural damage. In the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, intense rainfall led to significant flooding in Guadalajara and Zapopan, with water levels in some underpasses reaching up to 1.9 meters, necessitating rescues and road closures.

In the Jardines del Country neighborhood, a major sinkhole measuring approximately 15 meters long and 3 meters deep opened on Enrique Díaz de León Norte, swallowing a vehicle. These weather events follow previous flooding in Zapopan, Tonalá, and Tlaquepaque that had already disrupted transit and Siteur electric train lines.

Beyond Jalisco, heavy rainfall caused further disruptions across the country. In Cuautitlán Izcalli, consecutive days of rain resulted in collapsed walls, fallen trees, and the suspension of classes at local primary and secondary schools. In the Yucatán Peninsula, tropical wave number 37 brought intense electrical activity and up to 103 mm of rainfall to Mérida, causing power outages. Mexico City also reported flooding in the Venustiano Carranza and Iztacalco boroughs, leading to slow-moving traffic on several Metro lines.

On September 20, the flooding crisis continued in Jalisco as the Arroyo Zapotlanejo overflowed due to intense storms. In the municipality of Zapotlanejo, at least 46 homes and various businesses in sectors including Bellavista, Ciudad Perdida, La Cantera, and El Plan were affected, with water levels in some areas exceeding one meter. While emergency services established a joint Command Post for rescue and damage assessment, no deaths, injuries, or missing persons have been reported.
