Severe storms cause flooding and sinkholes across Mexico

Severe storms and heavy rainfall have caused widespread flooding, infrastructure damage, and transit disruptions across several Mexican regions.

In the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, intense rain led to significant flooding in Guadalajara and Zapopan. A major sinkhole, measuring approximately 15 meters long and 3 meters deep, opened on Enrique Díaz de León Norte in the Jardines del Country neighborhood, swallowing a vehicle. Authorities reported water levels reaching up to 1.9 meters in some underpasses, necessitating rescues and road closures.

In Cuautitlán Izcalli, consecutive days of heavy rain caused flooding, fallen trees, and collapsed walls. The weather also forced the suspension of classes at local primary and secondary schools due to inaccessible routes. In Mérida, the passage of tropical wave number 37 brought intense electrical activity and rainfall, with some areas recording up to 103 mm. These storms caused power outages and fallen trees in the Yucatán Peninsula.

Mexico City also experienced significant impacts, with heavy rainfall and electrical storms causing flooding in the Venustiano Carranza and Iztacalco boroughs. The storms led to slow-moving traffic on several Metro lines and caused delays at local events.
