Peru presents plan to recover Yarinacocha Lagoon from pollution
The Peruvian Ministry of the Environment (Minam) has introduced the Multisectoral Action Plan for the Environmental Recovery of Yarinacocha Lagoon for the period 2026-2030. Located in the Coronel Portillo province of Ucayali, the initiative aims to mitigate pollution and restore the natural, cultural, and tourist ecosystem of the area.
Environmental diagnostics identified eight discharge points into the lagoon and 14 accumulation points for domestic solid waste along its banks, both of which compromise water quality. The plan involves coordinated efforts between national, regional, and local authorities, including the National Water Authority (ANA) and the Environmental Assessment and Enforcement Agency (OEFA).
Minister of the Environment Vladimiro Huaroc emphasized that the recovery is vital for the thousands of residents, including Shipibo-Konibo communities, who rely on the lagoon for their cultural and economic livelihoods. Proposed actions include water treatment at discharge points, improved solid waste management, and enhanced environmental surveillance.
