Water pollution incidents in Peru
Overview
In the Junín region, a significant ecological disaster occurred in the Yuracyacu River when cyanide contamination was discovered. Forensic reports from the National Police of Peru confirmed hydrocyanic acid in water and fish tissue, leading to the death of approximately 2 to 2.5 million trout. Local communities have suspected upstream mining activities, specifically the Oro Negro project, for the contamination which has caused estimated economic losses exceeding 7.2 million soles and threatened local agriculture.
Separately, in the Ucayali province, the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment introduced a multisectoral action plan for the period 2026–2030 to recover the Yarinacocha Lagoon. This initiative addresses pollution from eight discharge points and solid waste accumulation to protect the livelihoods of local residents and Shipibo-Konibo communities.
