Guanajuato expands high school offerings and reviews educational models

Guanajuato is set to expand its upper secondary education offerings with the arrival of 14 Margarita Maza high schools for the 2026-2027 academic cycle. These campuses will be distributed across eight municipalities, including León, Silao, Salamanca, Irapuato, San Francisco del Rincón, Celaya, Pénjamo, and Uriangato. The new model utilizes a hybrid approach, combining four hours of in-person instruction with digital platforms and adaptable schedules to support academic, cultural, and scientific development.

To combat school dropout rates, the initiative includes a National Tutoring Program involving recent graduates and university students to provide academic and socio-emotional support. This project is part of a federal strategy to build 100 high schools nationwide, aiming to create 30,000 new educational spaces.

Separately, Guanajuato's Secretary of Education, Luis Ignacio Sánchez Gómez, announced that the state is analyzing modifications to the Bachillerato Bivalente Militarizado (BBM) model. Following directives from the federal Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) to transition toward civic-based and humanistic curricula, officials are considering a name change and reviewing subjects to ensure they align with federal guidelines. While the current six campuses in the state will continue operating this cycle, the state aims to maintain the system's successful results while adapting to new national educational standards.
