Guanajuato educational model reform

The state of Guanajuato is navigating a conflict regarding its bivalente high schools, which have been labeled as “militarized.” Following a directive from the federal Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) to close such institutions—a move prompted by a death at the Doenitz Military Academy—Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo initially defended the six existing campuses. She argued the schools function as technological centers for cybersecurity and civil protection rather than preparatory military training.

As the situation evolved, the state began reviewing the Bachillerato Bivalente Militarizado (BBM) model to align with federal guidelines. The Secretary of Education, Luis Ignacio Sánchez Gómez, announced that officials are considering name changes and curriculum modifications to transition toward civic-based and humanistic education. While the current campuses will continue to operate during the upcoming cycle, the state is working to adapt the system to new national standards.

Concurrently, Guanajuato is expanding its broader upper secondary education through the introduction of 14 Margarita Maza high schools across eight municipalities. This expansion utilizes a hybrid instructional model and includes a tutoring program to combat dropout rates.
