Guanajuato government repatriates migrant killed while fleeing ICE raid in Florida

On July 14, 2024, 28‑year‑old Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán, a migrant from San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, was struck by a truck while attempting to escape a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in San Agustín, Florida. His death follows other recent fatalities of Mexican nationals in ICE custody.

Mexican authorities coordinated the return of his remains. The Guanajuato Secretariat of Human Rights, under Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, oversaw the repatriation, working with the Mexican Consulate in Orlando and a local funeral service. The state pledged to reimburse the family for transportation costs and is providing psycho‑legal assistance. The body arrived in Guanajuato on Wednesday and funeral rites were held in his hometown.
