Overview

In early July 2026 a series of ICE enforcement actions resulted in three deaths within a week. Two Guatemalan brothers were charged with murdering a former Marine after a clash at a construction site in St. Johns County, where ICE detainers had prevented their deportation. Days later, ICE and Homeland Security Investigations stopped a vehicle at a St. Augustine gas station; when the four occupants fled, 28‑year‑old Mexican tourist Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán ran onto State Road 16 and was struck by a semi‑tractor‑trailer, dying at the scene. Coronilla was on a tourist visa, staying with family in Atlanta before traveling to a Florida beach vacation. His wife, Yezzika (Jessica) Alamilla, said he had a return flight scheduled for July 18 and left two young children. Mexican officials, assisted by the farm‑worker group Colectivo Árbol, provided a plane ticket, lodging and repatriation of his remains. A 45‑year‑old Venezuelan detainee later died of apparent cardiac arrest while being transferred between Georgia detention facilities, raising the 2026 ICE‑in‑custody death toll to 22. Mexico has asked U.S. state prosecutors to review recent migrant deaths linked to ICE operations. DHS suspended most ICE traffic stops while investigations continue; the whereabouts of the other three vehicle occupants remain unknown.

In August 2026 the Guanajuato Secretariat of Human Rights, under Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, coordinated the return of Coronilla’s remains from the United States. The Mexican consulate in Orlando and a local funeral service facilitated the repatriation, and the state pledged to reimburse the family for transportation costs and to provide psycho‑legal assistance. Funeral rites were held in his hometown of San Luis de la Paz.
