Salamanca and San Luis de La Paz shootings kill nine in Guanajuato

On 20 June 2026 armed attacks struck two municipalities in Guanajuato. In Salamanca, gunmen opened fire on a group of youths gathered at a football field in the community of San Juan de Razo, killing five people, including two adolescents, and wounding two others. Later that evening, in the town of Puerto Blanco in the municipality of San Luis de La Paz, a shooting at a liquor‑store venue left four dead and three injured.

The combined toll of the two incidents was nine fatalities and several injuries. Security forces from the state police, the National Guard and municipal authorities secured the scenes and began investigations. Authorities have not made any arrests.

Investigators, citing an interview with local journalist Ignacio Tapia, said the attacks are likely linked to a dispute between organized crime groups over control of illegal fuel theft in the region, specifically between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and a local group known as Santa Rosa de Lima. The motive remains under investigation.
