Gun violence surge spreads across Mexico

Overview

Mid‑June 2026 marked the start of a wave of firearm attacks that quickly moved beyond its initial epicentre. Early violence in Guanajuato included killings in Salamanca and León, as well as an armed assault in Salamanca’s La Tinaja community that killed a woman and wounded a man.

On 20 June, mass shootings in Salamanca and San Luis de La Paz left at least nine dead. In Salamanca’s San Juan de Razo, gunmen killed six people, including two minors. Investigators suggested these attacks might be linked to disputes between organized crime groups, such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and Santa Rosa de Lima, over illegal fuel theft.

Throughout late June and July, violence persisted in Guanajuato, including the murder of a hospital worker in Pénjamo and multiple shootings in León and Valle de Santiago. In Puebla, attacks in Chignahuapan and various neighborhoods in Puebla city resulted in several fatalities. In Sinaloa, a motorcyclist was killed in Navolato on 15 July, and on 19 July, three men were targeted in Villa Benito Juárez, resulting in three deaths.

The surge continued through late July with shootings in Hermosillo, Sonora; Cuernavaca, Morelos; and Guadalupe, Nuevo León. In Pénjamo, an attack on a family gathering left four dead and two wounded. Despite ongoing investigations and heightened security operations by the National Guard and state authorities, many motives remain unclear and suspects have frequently evaded capture.
