Guanajuato reports surge in homicides following violent 24-hour period

The state of Guanajuato, Mexico, has experienced a surge in violence following a relatively lower-fatality weekend. Between October 2 and October 4, authorities reported eight homicides across various municipalities, including Silao, Valle de Santiago, Celaya, and Salvatierra. This weekend figure represented a 20 percent decrease compared to the previous weekend in late September.

However, violence escalated sharply at the start of the following week. Within a 24-hour period, the State Attorney General's Office reported 12 murders across the state. These incidents occurred in San Felipe, San Diego de la Unión, León, Irapuato, Salamanca, Celaya, and Tarimoro. In León alone, four deaths were recorded in different neighborhoods, while in Salamanca, a man and a woman were killed in the Barlovento neighborhood.

The State Attorney General's Office noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of death and identify those responsible. While recent weekend figures showed a temporary dip, the rapid increase in killings at the start of the week highlights continued instability in the region.
