Guardia Civil Director General Mercedes González Faces Resignation Calls

Senior police unions and professional bodies in Spain have jointly demanded that the Guardia Civil’s director general, Mercedes González, and the deputy operational director, Manuel Llamas, resign. The call follows a judge’s investigation into both officials, with the Interior Ministry publicly backing them despite the probe. The unions cite the Civil Guard’s personnel law, which permits suspension or removal of officers under criminal investigation, arguing that continued service “undermines the institution’s prestige and public confidence.”

The Association of Unified Guardia Civil Officers (AUGC) also issued a statement, emphasizing that any guard under investigation should not remain in command and urging immediate dismissal of the two senior officers. The controversy centers on allegations brought by the prosecutor and the involvement of national judge Santiago Pedraz.
