Guardia Civil opens first cybercrime unit in Barakaldo

The Guardia Civil has established its first Ciberpuesto in Barakaldo, Bizkaia. This decentralized unit, initially staffed by 20 agents, is designed to manage nationwide reports of online crimes, including scams, unauthorized charges, and vehicle thefts submitted through the body’s electronic headquarters.

In broader crime trends within Spain, the Fiscalía General del Estado reported a 16.9% decrease in judicial proceedings related to illegal housing occupations in 2025, totaling 7,110 cases. Most of these incidents involve the usurpation of vacant properties rather than residential burglaries.

Conversely, real estate scams are rising in Navarra. The Guardia Civil has recorded 47 reports of such fraud in 2026 so far, representing a 30% increase over the previous year. Officials attribute this surge to high demand and low housing supply, with criminals using fake advertisements on social media and rental platforms to target victims.
