Guardia Civil cybercrime response in Spain
Overview
The Guardia Civil has noted a significant increase in cybercrime activity within Spain. In the Castilla y León region, authorities reported 6,146 cyber-related offenses between January 1 and August 31, accounting for 25 percent of the total criminal offenses handled by the force during that period.
Brigadier General Miguel Sánchez Guerrero stated that the force must now operate both on the ground and in digital environments to address the expansion of criminal activity into cyberspace. In response to these trends, the Guardia Civil established its first decentralized cybercrime unit, known as a ‘Ciberpuesto’, in Barakaldo, Bizkaia. This unit, initially staffed by 20 agents, is tasked with managing nationwide reports of online crimes such as scams, unauthorized charges, and vehicle thefts.
