Livorno marine cleanup draws volunteers to clear seabed

On Saturday 20 June 2026, the Comune di Livorno and the marine research centre CIBM launched the “Tuffo Pulito – Anima Blu” clean‑up at the Scogli Piatti del Boccale, extending the effort along the coast to Calignaia. The event, promoted by biologist Jacopo Querci and admiral Giordano Cottini, involved local sports clubs, the Biennale del Mare and volunteer divers who used masks, fins and bags to collect plastic and other waste from the seabed.

Organisers emphasized that each piece of plastic removed helps protect the ecosystem, stating “bringing your own plastic home is a simple gesture that, multiplied by thousands of people each summer, really safeguards this environment.” No competition or timing was involved; participants—including kayakers, canoes and stand‑up‑paddlers—were encouraged to join and spread the environmental message.

The initiative is part of CIBM’s ongoing “Blu Next Livorno” program, aimed at raising awareness of marine pollution and reporting degradation to authorities.
