Aurora Valenti, 22, dies after fall at Guardia di Finanza school in L'Aquila

Aurora Valenti, a 22‑year‑old woman from Alcamo, died in the night of 24‑25 July 2026 after falling from the third‑floor window of her room in the Guardia di Finanza School of Inspectors and Supervisors in Coppito, a district of L'Aquila. The Prosecutor’s Office of L'Aquila opened an investigation, assigning the case to the State Police and ordering an autopsy. Investigators are collecting testimonies from friends, classmates and staff while keeping all hypotheses – including a possible voluntary act – under consideration.

The tragedy prompted widespread condolence messages from local authorities, including the mayor of L'Aquila, the mayor of Alcamo, and the head of the university of L'Aquila. Italian police and several finance‑guard syndicates (SIAF, USIF, SINAF) called for stronger psychological support for trainees. The incident also sparked a political dispute: Senator Guido Liris criticised Senator Ilaria Cucchi for comments on the school, while Cucchi cited previous reports of harsh conditions at the institution. The case remains under judicial scrutiny.
