Guatemala announces holiday closures for Independence Day

Guatemala will observe national holidays in September to commemorate the 205th anniversary of its independence. On Tuesday, September 15, the Superintendencia de Bancos (SIB) announced that banking and financial institutions, including banks, insurance companies, and microfinance entities, will close.

While most institutions will be closed, some agencies will provide special services. A list of open branches is expected to be published by the SIB on September 14.

Additionally, President Bernardo Arévalo has authorized Monday, September 14, as a paid holiday for state employees. This government decree applies to workers in centralized and decentralized public administration entities, allowing for a long weekend. However, this benefit does not extend to the private sector, and essential public service workers are excluded to ensure continuity of services.
