Guatemala Independence Day holiday arrangements

Overview

Guatemala has established holiday arrangements for the 205th anniversary of its independence in September.

Initially, the Supreme Court of Justice authorized paid leave for Judicial Branch employees on Monday, September 14, following a request from the Judicial Branch Workers' Union to facilitate travel for Independence Day celebrations. To maintain essential services, duty courts were scheduled to operate starting Friday to handle requirements from the public and various ministries.

Subsequently, President Bernardo Arévalo issued a government decree authorizing September 14 as a paid holiday for state employees across centralized and decentralized public administration entities. While this provides a long weekend for the public sector, the benefit does not extend to the private sector. Additionally, the Superintendencia de Bancos announced that banking and financial institutions, including insurance and microfinance entities, will close on the national holiday, Tuesday, September 15.
