Guatemala anticipates around 78,000 Salvadoran tourists for August Fiestas Agostinas

Guatemala’s national tourism institute (Inguat) projects that between August 1 and 6, 2026, roughly 78,000 to 79,000 visitors from neighboring El Salvador will travel to the country for the annual Fiestas Agostinas. The forecast slightly exceeds the 78,576 Salvadoran arrivals recorded for the same period in 2025.

Inguat is promoting three themed itineraries – the History and Flavor Route, the Tradition and Adventure Route, and the Caribbean and Faith Route – covering destinations such as Antigua Guatemala, Lake Atitlán, the eastern Caribbean coast, and archaeological sites like Tak’alik and Quiriguá. The agency will deploy a tourism assistance plan with staff at borders and major sites to ensure smooth entry and safety. Officials expect the influx to boost occupancy for hotels, restaurants, transport services and other small‑ and medium‑sized enterprises that rely on cross‑border tourism.

The expected increase underscores the importance of the Salvadoran market for Guatemala’s tourism sector and aims to reinforce the country’s position as a leading regional destination.
