Guatemala-El Salvador August travel surge and impact

Overview

Guatemala’s tourism authority, Inguat, projected that between August 1 and 6, 2026, approximately 78,000 to 79,000 Salvadoran visitors would travel to the country for the annual Fiestas Agostinas. This forecast slightly exceeds the 78,576 arrivals recorded during the same period in 2025. To support this, Inguat promoted themed itineraries—including the History and Flavor, Tradition and Adventure, and Caribbean and Faith routes—covering destinations such as Antigua Guatemala, Lake Atitlán, and various archaeological sites.

In preparation, Guatemala’s Institute of Migration (IGM) announced reinforced staffing at major border posts, including Valle Nuevo, Pedro de Alvarado, Nueva Anguiatú, and San Cristóbal, as well as at La Aurora International Airport. Simultaneously, El Salvador’s immigration authority (DGME) deployed mobile scanners, electronic scales, and real-time data-sharing systems at land borders to allow immigration checks without occupants leaving their vehicles. El Salvador also utilized a new control point at El Coco, opened in March 2026, to speed vehicle flow.

Following the festival period, data indicated that El Salvador saw a 5% increase in visitors during July, contributing an estimated $21.6 million in economic impact during the Fiestas Agostinas. This contributed to a broader trend in Guatemala, which recorded 1,915,874 tourists between January and July 2026, a 1.2% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
