Guatemala commission begins process to select Comptroller General

The nomination commission for the Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC) in Guatemala has officially begun its work to select candidates for the 2026-2030 term. Comprising 27 professionals and presided over by Miquel Cortés, rector of Universidad Rafael Landívar, the commission will meet at the university headquarters to establish a shortlist of six candidates for the Congress of the Republic.

The commission has approved its internal regulations and a work schedule. Key dates include the publication of the official call on August 20, the receipt of candidate files between August 22 and 25, and the publication of the list of excluded candidates on August 28. Following a period for appeals and civil society challenges, interviews are scheduled for September 10 and 11. The final list of six nominees must be delivered to Congress by September 22.

To make decisions, the commission requires a minimum of 18 votes. During its initial sessions, the group worked to resolve internal divisions regarding the election of its secretary and deputy secretary.
