Elfego Castañón elected as Guatemala's new Comptroller General

The Congress of the Republic of Guatemala has elected Elfego Odair Castañón González as the new Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC) for the 2026-2030 term. Castañón González secured a significant majority with 154 votes. The only dissenting vote came from his brother, Deputy Manfredo Duvalier Castañón González of the Movimiento Semilla party, who cited ethical reasons for his opposition.

Castañón González, who currently serves as the administrative sub-controller of the CGC, will succeed Frank Bode Fuentes. His election follows a process involving a Postulation Commission, where he received 65 points—the lowest score among the six finalists. His candidacy faced scrutiny regarding potential conflicts of interest due to family members working within the institution, including his brother Lenin Magdonal Castañón González and his wife, Liliana Aracely Fuentes Fuentes.

As Comptroller General, Castañón González will be responsible for auditing state resources, municipalities, and decentralized entities. The role is particularly critical ahead of the 2027 elections, as the CGC is responsible for issuing the certificates of solvency (finiquitos) required for political candidates to register for office. He is scheduled to take office on October 13.
