Guatemala Conred reports surge in earthquakes and forecast of below‑normal rains

The Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres (Conred) announced that 60 detectable earthquakes occurred in the last 24 hours, the largest measuring magnitude 5.9 with its epicenter off the Pacific coast near Escuintla. Year‑to‑date seismic activity reaches 4,737 events, 125 of which were felt, but no damage or injuries have been reported. Conred urged residents to keep family emergency plans ready, identify evacuation routes, and maintain a 72‑hour emergency kit.

In a separate bulletin, Conred warned that the August‑October 2026 rainfall season is expected to be below normal for most of Guatemala. A strong El Niño is projected to extend a prolonged heat wave, raising the risk of water‑deficit conditions. Although Atlantic cyclone activity is forecast to be weaker than average, the agency said isolated storms could still affect the country and said monitoring remains ongoing.
