Guatemala denies Belizean allegations of military airspace incursion
Guatemala and Belize are engaged in a diplomatic dispute following allegations of a military airspace incursion. Belizean officials claim radar data shows a Guatemalan military aircraft entered their airspace near Lighthouse Reef and Caye Caulker on the night of September 24. Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño described the incident as a breach of sovereignty and has sought an explanation through diplomatic channels.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo has flatly denied the allegations, stating that no such flight occurred. Arévalo has challenged the credibility of the tracking information and has offered to provide the aircraft’s flight records to the Organization of American States (OAS) for inspection to prove no incursion took place.
Separately, the Guatemalan government is investigating the military's role in a massacre in Huité, Zacapa, which left eight people dead. While the administration initially denied involvement, President Arévalo has since confirmed that military units were deployed in the area during the incident. A multidisciplinary commission has been ordered to investigate the extent of the military's participation.
