Belize-Guatemala border sovereignty disputes

Overview

Tensions between Belize and Guatemala have escalated following a series of maritime and aerial incidents near disputed territories. On September 10, 2026, the Belizean Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a formal protest after approximately 18 Guatemalan military and civilian vessels reportedly obstructed Belizean nationals near Sarstoon Island. Belize characterized this deployment as a violation of its sovereignty and notified the Organization of American States.

Following the maritime incident, Belizean authorities began investigating an unauthorized flight by a Guatemalan Air Force Pilatus PC-12 NG. The aircraft reportedly flew over the Lighthouse Reef Atoll and near Caye Caulker before its transponder signal was lost. By September 25, Belize confirmed it had gathered evidence, including GPS coordinates, and planned to issue a formal protest note.

On September 27, the dispute reached the United Nations General Assembly. Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño accused Guatemala of violating sovereignty on September 24, alleging the aircraft intentionally disabled its transponder. Briceño stated such incursions are part of a continuing pattern of unlawful operations in the Sarstoon River area that could undermine the authority of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ahead of scheduled hearings in February 2027.

Guatemala has rejected these claims. On September 30, Guatemalan President Bernardo Aréval denied the allegations, stating, “this flight did not take place,” and suggested reports might have originated from an individual using a flight-tracking app. The Guatemalan government has offered the aircraft to the Organization of American States (OAS) for inspection of its flight records to resolve the dispute.
