Guatemala faces electricity demand surge and grid bottlenecks

Guatemala is facing a potential energy crisis as electricity demand reaches record highs. Between March and May of this year, the country broke its demand record three times, with the most recent peak reaching 2,417 megawatts—nearly 10% higher than previous maximums.

While economic growth and industrialization are driving demand, the electrical transmission network is struggling to keep pace. The President of the National Electric Energy Commission reported to Congress that over one hundred transmission projects are currently stalled due to issues with permits, licenses, and rights-of-way. Building high-voltage lines is a lengthy process, often taking six to seven years, with only a fraction of that time dedicated to physical construction.

To address these bottlenecks, there is an urgent push for the approval of Initiative 6665, known as the Urgent Infrastructure Law for Energy Transport. This legislation aims to streamline the process for energy transmission projects. Current discussions in the Energy and Mines Commission are focused on amendments to the bill to resolve administrative hurdles.
