Overview

Guatemala has been experiencing record-high electricity demand, driven by industrialization and economic growth. This surge has highlighted significant bottlenecks in the electrical transmission network, where over one hundred projects are currently stalled due to administrative hurdles regarding permits and licenses. To mitigate these issues, there has been legislative movement toward Initiative 6665, the ‘Urgent Infrastructure Law for Energy Transport’, intended to streamline energy transmission projects.

These infrastructure vulnerabilities contributed to a major failure in the Central American Regional Electrical System (SER), which triggered a regional power outage affecting Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. In Guatemala, the failure caused a disconnection from the Mexican electrical grid, resulting in a loss of 435.66 MW and impacting over 20 municipalities. While the regional system has stabilized, investigations into the cause of the disturbance are ongoing.
