Guatemala faces major institutional leadership transitions

Guatemala is approaching a period of significant institutional turnover as several key leadership cycles conclude in late September and October.

In the financial sector, the terms for the current authorities of the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat), the Monetary Board, and the Superintendency of Banks (SIB) end on September 30. President Bernardo Arévalo is responsible for appointing the new president and vice president of the Monetary Board and Banguat for a four-year term. For the SIB, the President will select a leader from a shortlist of three candidates provided by the Monetary Board.

Simultaneously, major shifts are expected in judicial and oversight bodies. By October 13, the term for the Comptroller General of Accounts will end, with the Congress of the Republic tasked with selecting a successor from a final list of six candidates. Additionally, the presidency of the Supreme Court of Justice will conclude, requiring the 13 magistrates to elect new leadership for the Judicial Branch. The National Council for Attention to Migrants (Conamigua) will also see the end of mandates for its secretary and sub-secretary on the same date.
