Guatemala IGSS announces pension bonus and legislative reform

The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) has announced a one-time extraordinary bonus of Q1,000 for retirees to commemorate the institution's 80th anniversary. The bonus is scheduled to be credited to beneficiaries between October 28 and October 31, 2026, covering various programs including death, old age, disability, and survivorship pensions.

Separately, the Guatemalan Congress's Labor Commission has issued a favorable report on legislative initiative 6694. This proposal aims to increase IGSS pensions and ensure state contributions. The initiative seeks to mandate that the Ministry of Public Finance include a specific annual allocation for the IGSS Pension Fund within the General State Budget. It also proposes a progressive leveling of pensions, prioritizing those currently below the non-agricultural minimum wage, with the goal of reaching that threshold within two years.
