Guatemalan social security and legislative benefits
Overview
The Guatemalan Congress renewed a collective insurance policy for its 160 deputies and various directors for an additional two years. Contracted with Crédito Hipotecario Nacional at a cost of Q15.8 million, the policy provides emergency hospital care, medical consultations, and air ambulance transfers, alongside maternity and life insurance coverage.
Concurrently, the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) announced a one-time Q1,000 bonus for retirees to mark its 80th anniversary. In terms of long-term reform, the Congressional Labor Commission issued a favorable report on legislative initiative 6694. This proposal seeks to mandate annual state budget allocations for the IGSS Pension Fund and implement a progressive leveling of pensions to ensure they reach the non-agricultural minimum wage within two years.
