Guatemala prepares for protests over rising fuel costs

Guatemala is preparing for significant demonstrations in the capital city regarding rising fuel costs. On September 9, transport unions plan to march with over 100 buses to pressure the government and Congress to implement relief measures. The transport sector has warned that if diesel reaches Q45 per gallon, passenger fares could increase by approximately Q1. They are also calling for the accelerated creation of a compensation fund to offset the rising costs of fuel, oils, and tires.

In a separate mobilization, the 48 Cantones of Totonicapán have announced a peaceful march for September 8. The organization issued a statement categorically denying rumors circulating on social media that they intend to authorize road blockades. They emphasized that their movement is a peaceful exercise of constitutional rights and aims to avoid causing public distress or disrupting daily activities.

National authorities have noted previous blockades in the western, southeastern, and Petén regions. The National Civil Police stated they will deploy protocols focused on human rights while maintaining firmness against any public order disturbances.
