Keiko Fujimori confirmed as Peru's president after razor‑thin runoff
Peru’s National Jury of Elections (JNE) officially proclaimed Keiko Fujimori of Fuerza Popular the winner of the 2026 presidential runoff with 50.135% of valid votes (9,223,396) against left‑wing candidate Roberto Sánchez’s 49.865% (9,173,755). The margin was about 50,000 votes out of 27.3 million eligible voters, with a turnout of 72.0% (19.7 million). Following the proclamation, the Council of Ministers ordered the start of the governmental transition and appointed Marco Vinelli to coordinate the process.
International leaders congratulated Fujimori, including Brazil’s President Lula, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Guatemala’s President. Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz confirmed a delegation would attend the inauguration, and the Bolivian foreign ministry announced plans to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The new president has pledged to address Peru’s security crisis, curb organized crime, and pursue economic stability, while facing a fragmented Congress and a legacy of political volatility.
Fujimori’s victory marks the return of the Fujimori political brand to the Peruvian executive after more than two decades, raising concerns and expectations across the region.
