Gang-linked prison deaths and violence reported in Guatemala, Mexico, Spain and Chile
In Guatemala, an armed incident at the Centro de Detención Preventiva for Men Anexo B on 2 August 2026 left inmate Carlos Roberto Ortiz Romero, known as “Gorgojo” and linked to the Mara Salvatrucha, dead along with his wife. Prison authorities activated an emergency protocol, isolated suspected participants and began a thorough search of the facility while the police prepare to take the suspects into custody.
In Mexico, Gerardo L. G., alias “El Tokio”, was formally linked to the January 2024 triple homicide of three men in the Las Arecas neighbourhood. A judge ordered preventive detention and set a three‑month deadline for further investigation, including forensic DNA analysis. Separately, the Guanajuato state prosecutor captured and charged Alejandro Isaías and Zureth Jesmart for a June 2026 shooting that killed a man in the capital’s Villaseca neighbourhood.
In Spain, three staff members of the Sevilla II prison were injured while intervening in a violent fight between two inmates in module 5 of the facility. The Central Independent Union of Officials (CSIF) warned that such incidents are becoming more frequent, citing overcrowding and staffing shortages.
In Chile, the Gendarmería dismissed four prison employees after uncovering a corruption network that allowed the irregular entry of food parcels into the Santiago 1 detention centre. The case was referred to the public prosecutor for further action.
