Guatemala records 478 aftershocks following July 17 magnitude‑7.4 quake

The Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología (Insivumeh) reported that the seismic sequence triggered by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake on 17 July 2026 off Guatemala's Pacific coast has produced a total of 478 registered events. Of those, 34 were felt by residents, with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to the main shock's 7.4.

The most recent notable aftershock measured magnitude 5.5 and occurred at 23:26 on 24 July 2026. Insivumeh continues permanent monitoring of the activity, publishing maps and temporal graphs of the events. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) reminded the public that Guatemala experiences high seismic activity due to its tectonic setting, noting that more than 3,720 earthquakes have been recorded nationwide in 2026.
