Guatemala reports earthquake and heightened volcanic activity

Guatemala is experiencing increased geological activity, including a perceptible earthquake and heightened volcanic unrest. A magnitude 3.4 earthquake with an epicenter in Honduras was felt in Guatemala on Saturday night. The event was classified as superficial, occurring at a depth of only two kilometers.

Simultaneously, Insivumeh reported significant activity from several volcanoes. Volcán de Fuego produced ash columns reaching between 4,200 and 4,500 meters above sea level, with ash dispersing up to 40 kilometers to the west. The volcano also experienced avalanches on its western, southwestern, and southern flanks.

Volcán Santiaguito showed signs of degassing and ash plumes reaching up to 3,500 meters. Additionally, monitoring stations at Volcán Pacaya detected degassing in the Mackenny crater. Authorities have issued warnings regarding the risk of ballistic material and pyroclastic density currents, advising against remaining in high-risk areas.
