Geological activity in Guatemala

Overview

In late August 2026, the Santiaguito volcano in Guatemala exhibited constant degassing and explosions. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) reported ash and gas columns reaching heights of 400 to 800 meters above the Caliente dome. Authorities warned of potential pyroclastic density currents and lahars in the Nimá I, Tambor, and Cabello de Ángel rivers due to local rainfall.

By mid-September, geological activity in the region intensified. A superficial magnitude 3.4 earthquake with an epicenter in Honduras was felt in Guatemala. Concurrently, volcanic unrest increased across multiple sites. Volcán de Fuego produced ash columns reaching between 4,200 and 4,500 meters above sea level and experienced avalanches on several flanks. Santiaguito also showed increased activity with ash plumes reaching up to 3,500 meters, while degassing was detected at Volcán Pacaya’s Mackenny crater. Authorities maintained warnings regarding ballistic material and pyroclastic density currents.
