Guatemala security forces deploy surveillance in Guatemala City

Guatemalan security forces, including the National Civil Police (PNC) and the Army, have deployed intensified surveillance operations under the ‘Plan Semáforo Seguro’ in Guatemala City. These operations are concentrated on major transit corridors, specifically the Anillo Periférico and Calzada Roosevelt, to prevent vehicle robberies and armed attacks.

The deployment follows recent incidents of violence on these routes, including an armed attack on a microbus on September 7 and another incident near El Trébol on September 3. Authorities are conducting identity checks, inspecting motorcycles, and searching for individuals wanted by justice to curb criminal activity involving weapons and motorcycles.

Officials from the Ministry of the Interior have indicated that these security measures are intended to be permanent throughout the year to address public concerns regarding robberies and violence in these high-traffic sectors.
