Guatemalan security operations against armed crime

Overview

In August 2026, Guatemalan authorities increased security in Escuintla following armed attacks on commercial establishments. The National Civil Police (PNC) and the Guatemalan Army established containment perimeters and reinforced patrols in strategic zones and along National Route 14 to protect businesses and residents. Criminal investigation divisions began analyzing ballistic evidence and surveillance footage to identify perpetrators behind the attacks.

By September 2026, security operations expanded to Guatemala City under the ‘Plan Semáforo Seguro’. Following violent incidents on major transit corridors, including an armed attack on a microbus, the PNC and the Army deployed intensified surveillance on the Anillo Periférico and Calzada Roosevelt. These measures, which include identity checks and motorcycle inspections, are intended to be permanent to combat vehicle robberies and armed attacks.
