Guatemala selects six candidates for Comptroller General
Guatemala’s Nomination Commission has finalized a list of six candidates to serve as Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC) for the 2026-2030 term. Following four rounds of voting, the selected professionals are Luis Antonio Marroquín Pimentel, Marco Antonio Vélez González, Jorge Giovanni Castellanos Gudiel, Elfego Odair Castañón González, Óscar Alberto Hernández Romero, and Julio Otoniel Roca Morales.
The selection process has drawn scrutiny due to various allegations and professional backgrounds. Several candidates are current or former officials of the CGC or the Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT). Some nominees faced challenges regarding their professional history; for instance, Jorge Giovanni Castellanos Gudiel received multiple objections concerning academic credentials and hiring practices, while Luis Antonio Marroquín Pimentel had a specific objection regarding overlapping schedules rejected by the commission.
The list will now be presented to the Congress of the Republic, where deputies must elect the new Comptroller with at least 81 votes. President Bernardo Arévalo expressed confidence in the process, describing the finalists as “solid” professionals. The new Comptroller is expected to take office on October 13, 2026.
