Guatemala taxi drivers protest fuel price hikes, march to Congress

On August 3, 2026, taxi drivers affiliated with the Association of Pilots of Taxis of Guatemala (Asotax) organized a peaceful caravan from kilometer 15 of the Roosevelt road in Mixco toward the Congress of the Republic. The protest, led by vice‑president Rolando López, demanded the removal or reduction of taxes on fuel imports and sales and criticized the lack of transparency in the current fuel subsidy system. Participants called on other drivers, app‑based operators and private motorists to join, and planned to use only the right‑hand lane to minimise traffic disruption. The convoy reached the perimeter of the congressional building, where they sought a meeting with legislators to present their proposal for lowering fuel prices.

The drivers argue that eliminating the fuel taxes would more directly reduce prices than the existing subsidy model, which they claim lacks clarity on fund allocation. Police and municipal traffic officials monitored the march, and the protest highlighted broader concerns about the high cost of fuel for commuters and transport workers in Guatemala.
